So this strapping fellow is “Anval Thricedamned,” from the BBEG collection for Reaper Bones. I’m pretty sure I have painted another of these, but you can definitely tell they were going for a “look” with the cartoonish proportions, etc. Now for a ready-to-play backstory….
Background of Anval Thricedamned
Once revered as the champion of the Bloodstone Arena in the bustling city of Valthar, Anval Thricedamned was a gladiator whose prowess in combat was only matched by his overwhelming charisma. Raised in the shadowy alleys of the city, Anval learned to fight not just for survival but for glory. His rise to fame was fueled by the admiration of his mentor, the wise and battle-hardened veteran, Eldrin the Unyielding, who saw the spark of greatness in him. However, the glittering fame and wealth of a champion could not shield him from the harsh realities of the corrupt underbelly that thrived beyond the arena’s walls.
The Descent into Darkness
Eldrin’s mentorship began with not only training him in fighting, but in power, dominance and control. He taught Anval about the harsh world around him, and the need to gain respect. Over time, his lessons began to shift, and Anval was told that compassion was a weakness, and that only the strong deserved to thrive and rule.
Eldrin’s manipulation grew, isolating Anval from previous friends and allies. Anval became more ruthless in the arena, eschewing any sense of a moral compass aside from his belief that violence was the only answer.
Finally, Eldrin managed to arrange a fight between Anval and an unknown opponent in the arena. It was a difficult battle, but eventually Anval savagely killed his opponent, only to discover that it was one of his dearest friends from his past. Anval confronted Eldrin about his duplicity, and a fight ensued. In the end, Anval killed his mentor but in the process lost whatever capacity for mercy he might have had. The crime, however, would lead Anval into the criminal element of the region.
A New Threat Emerges
Now, Anval has transformed from a celebrated hero into a villainous menace, rallying a band of disgraced gladiators and oppressed citizens under his banner. They gather in the forgotten ruins of the Crimson Bastion, a once-majestic stronghold now overtaken by weeds and shadows. With a burning desire to dismantle the corrupt powers of Valthar, Anval has begun orchestrating a series of daring raids on the merchant houses of the city, striking fear into the hearts of those who once cheered for him. As the city teeters on the brink of chaos, the fate of Valthar hangs in the balance, leaving heroes to question whether they can redeem a man who has become synonymous with destruction or if Anval Thricedamned is destined to become the very monster he once fought against.
