The Unforeseen End of Our D&D Campaign

“Okay, let’s call it then.”

Ugh, what a week. Without getting too deep into it, this week was downright terrible, one of the worst I’ve had in a while. The whole situation was so screwed up while simultaneously hitting so many of my buttons that when it suddenly stopped and almost completely evaporated away it left me reeling from the sudden emotional void that it left. That sounds complicated, but basically there was this event coming up that was going to be a prolonged period of dread and suffering ending with a lot of hurt and then suddenly the situation just went away. So now I have all this pent up energy and no great place to put it, so I’m blogging.

Unrelated to the aforementioned situation, one other thing that happened this week was that the D&D campaign I’ve been playing in for almost two years just ended. I knew that it was likely ending; of the five players, three would be leaving the game next year, myself being one of them as my wife would be working on the regular game night at a new gig. Another player was moving, and the third was starting chemotherapy for a pretty serious form of cancer. So it was likely that yesterday’s session would be the last, likely with us having a big throw-down with the villain whose lair we had been lurking around for the last two sessions.

But one of the players had his flight delayed and wasn’t back in town, and another’s child was throwing up. So then it was “let’s play board games” and then another backed out because board games just wasn’t their thing.

So the text quoted at the beginning of this post went out, and that was it. It is sort of a understood reality that most campaigns don’t actually end with big conclusions and happy endings, but rather just peter out as scheduling issues, burnout, and general ennui. That has been my experience many times–rarely have I gotten to the “end” of a campaign. But this one feels frustrating; I had been struggling a bit in the game because I was dissatisfied with my character and wanted the chance to try to get to a good place with it all. Hopefully we can try to get together for some kind of “closer” episode like some TV series do when they are facing cancellation. We’ll see.

In the meantime, here’s my (admittedly AI generated) pic of Vinare Suva, elven clockwork soul sorcerer.

  1. Sorry to hear this Rob. Its frustrating when something, anything really, ends ‘before its time’. All we can do is start anew and look forward to the next big adventure. *hugs*
