Bhaal’s Cultists: A Dangerous Encounter in Zethrelspire

We had a gaming session in October (and possibly the only one, as it turns out) with the PC’s following the deciphered letter to the city of ZIthrelspire. They also realize that the strange token they have found is a holy symbol of Bhaal, the forbidden god of murder.

In Zethrelspire they find the night guard of the Crowvein Bridge and ask to see the cleric Walfried, priest of the Naya Church, just as the letter had suggested. But the heroes are so awkward in the exchange that the guards are wary, and tell them to meet their contact in a part of the city ravaged by fire years ago.

Since they have some time to kill, the group wanders the city, gaining information and selling off some of their used gear they had taken from the hobgoblin tombs.

The meeting turns out to be a disaster, with the heroes blurting out their goal of finding the missing Specter’s Lantern to the mysterious figure who approaches them. The masked figure hadn’t come alone, and the encounter turns into an ambush, with the balance of the fight swinging back and forth as the PC’s fell victim to the attacker’s spell casting abilities. In the end, however, the heroes are able to gain the upper hand and turn the tide, thanks to some buffed-up spellcasting of their own (courtesy of the new 2024 Player’s Handbook).

At the end of the session the party finds themselves surrounded by dead cultists of Bhaal, one of whom they are convinced is Walfried, the respected priest of the most powerful temple in the city. And they are no closer to finding the lantern, either….

Comments welcome. The campaign may be taking a bit of a break on account of scheduling issues, but I will continue to drop content onto this blog in the meantime.
