Two Walking Dead

After all the stuff going on, I decided to get back into the hobby stuff, especially miniature painting, by falling back onto an old standby–painting zombies. These two come from some booster set from The Walking Dead miniatures game. There’s a handful of zombies and two rando survivors. Nice detail, a little different vibe from the Zombicide fare.

This does get me around to something I have been thinking a lot about: a connected group of posts from the blog Scent of a Gamer where the author writes about how he realized he was buying miniatures because that was what he did; it was he understood himself to be as a person. By the same token, he (and I) often paint miniatures just to paint them, often to post them on the blog but never to actually see a table. I get that. Part of the painting goal is to get me to tackle the huge pile of unpainted miniatures I possess, feel productive, and have something to share to the handful of people who read the blog. I used to do zombie games all the time (you can see the history of this over at Hard Boiled Zombies which I haven’t touched in five years). Sometimes I think to myself, “I should really get back into that.” But in the meantime I’m cranking out zombie miniatures to pad out my painting goals.

I’m sure some of this ruminating is based on watching my RPG hobby pastimes stumble, the weather turn cold and gray, and life throwing a couple of curveballs. But who knows where it will turn out. In the act of writing this post I looked back over Hard Boiled Zombies and thought “that was pretty cool.”

Comments welcome.

  1. I have a tendency to get in my head about my gaming hobbies from time to time and I always come back to that it doesn’t matter if I spend time on 10x more RPG campaigns than I ever actually get to run at the table because that’s what I enjoy doing. If I didn’t like it and I forced myself to do it that would be different. I assume you like painting, maybe it’s just that simple.

  2. I would like to play more than I do. I certainly end up getting pumped up for more painting/hobbying when I do get a game in. Having some sort of ‘regular’ game can be a huge help towards this. Even if it’s once a month. Sometimes the driver is painting up everything you need to host anybody for a game. It seems like that’s the key to getting people out to play….show up and throw dice and play with my minis.
